So I’ve just finished listening to ALL of the new albums and tracks mentioned. We’re living in a rare moment in music – they are all good. I was expecting at least one throwaway album in this, and it was probably going to be Thugger’s or a slight disappointment by Portugal. The Man. This is not the case. I feel like in some way, the music world decided to make up for the messiness the rest of society finds itself in right now.
I was thoroughly impressed by the new 2 Chainz album (Pitchfork gave it an 8/10) and I think it’s some of his best work by far. The Portugal. The Man album was also a phenomenal, diverse vibe of music. Same goes for Thug’s crooning record, it’s at least on par with his other melodic trap after one listen. Fleet Foxes was Fleet Foxes — the best way I can describe the new record (probably their sound in general) is to call it cosmically absent and physically present simultaneously. CTRL by SZA is stunning and emotionally influential. I know it wasn’t on the list but I just listened to it for the first time.
Lorde is LORDE.
It’s a good time.
Y’all I am overwhelmed. I woke up this morning, expecting to put on a playlist I updated with the boatload of new music released in the past two weeks. I open my Spotify, and what am I to find?
Apparently, an amount of new music that is near impossible to fully consume in a day.
Don’t know what I’m talking about? Let’s start with the singles.
Calvin Harris released his fourth single off his upcoming summer vibe album this morning. Called “Feels” it features Pharrell, Katy Perry and Big Sean. If you’ve seen my ultimately playlists, you know how much I like what Calvin’s doing. He changes up style, so new songs sometimes taking getting used to (for me, it’s in a similar vein to Kanye – I never like new Kanye at first), but bottom line is greatness.
NEXT we have singles from:
- DJ Khaled with Rihanna (kills always)and Bryson Tiller (tell me why Bryson sounds better on this one single than he did on his entire sophomore solo album)
- Majid Jordan & PARTYNEXTDOOR
- George Ezra
- Andy Grammar
- Dej Loaf (I like this one a surprising amount)
- Steve Aoki w/ Lil Yachty and Migos (it’s fine)
- Angus & Julia Stone
This deluge of singles is manageable, sure. I already listened to them. I think Coldplay, Macklemore, Action Bronson and a few others also just dropped tracks that I may get around to. Manageable.
IF 2 Chainz, Fleet Foxes, LORDE, Portugal. The Man and Young Thug also didn’t decide to drop albums??
Who thought this was a good idea?
Okay. I’m four songs in to the 2 Chainz album, and we have a Nicki guest feature. Favorite line so far – “Papoose wrote an Ether record, but I broke Aretha record.”
I’ll update with more as I listen.
